Water Proof Rice Discovered

Normally, rice really loves water. Most of the rice I've seen growing were in flooded rice paddies but as we all know, there can be such a thing as too much of a good thing. One of the ways rice crops are devastated is from floods. In this country a flooded rice crop probably won't make much of a difference but in other countries where rice is a staple, this could make the difference between having something to eat or going hungry.

Scientists at UC Davis (with collaboration from the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, I'm proud to say) have discovered a flood tolerant variety of rice. The implications of this discovery is huge especially in areas that are prone to floods like Bangladesh. Click on the here to read the full story.
